From time to time, I like to wander back into the archives of the MDSimages blog I have been running for about 15 years to share some relevant stories from that blog here on this relatively new site of mine. As I was all over the map from posts of events I have lit over the years to photography tips and tricks to personal rambles on that blog, I’ll try to focus to just the travel stuff here 🙂
Like this one from a trip to Canada. On this particular journey just a few years ago, I found myself dropping the bags right inside the door of the room, and running to the window immediately upon my arrival. As a photographer and time-lapse enthusiast, these views are what we dream of! In my other world, I am a lighting designer/director for corporate and live events. The event I was in Canada for was an event I have illuminated for several years running. This conference has always taken me to some pretty cool locations, and as you can see from THIS view, Vancouver was one of them! How I ended up with this amazing view is still a mystery to me, but I was (and still am) grateful to say the least. Thanks Rick!
So after enjoying the view for a view minutes, it was time to setup up the time-lapse camera … or shall I say several of them! I share a few of the clips in a video that I created below. Enjoy 🙂
When not out enjoying the amazing city of Vancouver in the evenings with the crew (I miss you guys!), or absorbing the cinematic view out of my harbor side view in the room with my early morning coffee, I was of course living in the conference center ballroom. It’s that building on the left side of the Moments Time-lapse video thumbnail above, the one with the grass on the room. Such a cool space!
During the evenings and times off from the event, I could often be found wandering the waterfront here in Vancouver. Lots to explore and capture … and that amazing color!
While NOT wandering about, my time was spent behind the lighting console programming Q’s … and of course daydreaming of the trip I was going to take up into the Canadian Rockies just after the program ended! Till then, it was time to pay attention to the work ahead of me.
This event has evolved over the years from a simple gray drape meeting set to the scenic display you can see here below. A welcome expansion and addition to the production value! As a lighting designer, I appreciated this new and upgraded pallet. So many scenic elements in which I could “paint with light” …. and of course, capture some cool photos of too 🙂
As with many of these kind of events in which I am fortunate enough to be a part of (again, thanks Rick!), I try to carve out a bit of personal time after the event to head out and explore this amazing world. British Columbia and the Canadian Rockies were calling out my name, and Vancouver was the perfect hopping off point to this scenic and image filled journey! What a beautiful place to explore!
For a deeper dive, take a few minutes and watch the video below. It has many more images that I gathered and created from the trip. I put this together with Animoto a while back and just realized that I never shared it either here OR on the Youtube channel. There it was, waiting patiently on the laptop hard drive. Been sharing a bit more over there btw! Would love to see you over there on the ole’ Youtube as well. Make sure and subscribe while you are there!
